Echo of Hearts

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies declare the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.” Psalms 19:1-6

When I look out at the mountains God created, I can’t help but be in awe as I sense His presence and marvel at His amazing creation. God is speaking to us in so many ways. The Bible is God’s word and the way He speaks to us, but he speaks in other ways too, and I love how personal He is. God speaks through prayer, reading the Bible, through other people, and Psalms 19 confirms that God is all around us, speaking through his creation.

My family and I always seem to find hearts,we look for them. When I see a heart shape, I take it as a personal way God refocuses my attention on Him. Just like when I read His word, and a scripture pops out at me even though I may have read it a hundred times before. I tell my children the hearts we find along the way in life are like little kisses from God. I use this demonstration to teach my children that God is personally speaking to us. God is present, saying he loves us through his word, his creation, and creativity. We find heart shapes everywhere, in the snow, on a tree, a cloud formation, a drizzle of water that formed together and made a heart. I even found an orange that looked like it had a perfect heart burned on the peel.

A couple years ago, my children asked for a puppy. We already had a wild Chihuahua named Emma. She is a tiny, adorable handful we love, but her barking stamina prompted me to say, “we can look for a Lab or Golden Retriever but not another Chihuahua.”

Our family decided to put a cute picture of a Labrador puppy on our goal board. In the picture, the little pups head was slightly tilted, with a curious look on his face. Each night, we prayed that God would lead us to find a good puppy that would fit into our family. We hoped to have him by the summer so we could have time to spend with him and train him up before the new school year began. Throughout the year, I called a few places that had puppies and we looked around, but each puppy did not seem like  the puppy we had been praying for. One day, my kids wanted to go to the animal shelter, which we did from time to time to visit the dogs. We walked in, and there sat two precious Chihuahua mixed puppies. The animal handler told us that the puppies just came in and are ready for a visit. The puppies were found living in the field and needed some love and nutrition. Right away, my children said, “Mom, can we visit the puppies?” I reminded them that we were not looking for another Chihuahua, but somehow, I was talked into a quick visit. When we went outside to the meet and greet area, I could not help but notice how sweet and gentle the little puppy was. He looked up at me with a tilted head and had a curious look on his face just like in the picture I had on our goal board, except he was a chihuahua, not a labrador. My children were enamored with him, and I kept feeling that this little puppy belonged in our family. While I was questioning my feelings, the puppy flipped over for a belly rub, and right smack on his belly was a perfectly shaped white heart on his black fur! My children took notice right away, and I could not deny it. God had painted this little puppy with a perfect shaped heart on his belly.

Was it coincidence or an amazing conversation through Gods own creation? I took it as little kiss from God. Over the years, I have learned that God knows what is best for us and when He is speaking, I listen up quicker than I used to. By reading the Bible, my relationship has deepened and I can see his presence in my life, and I notice when He is speaking. From life experiences, I found that God is personal, like with our little puppy! Friends, God takes the time to speak to us in tangible and palpable ways. He does it all the time all day long.

Even though I did not think we could handle the energy of another little Chihuahua, and I thought for sure our new puppy would be a Labrador or Golden Retriever- It turns out that our little Chihuahua is just what we needed. Our puppy Luke has made a big difference in our lives and has a special way about him. Luke calms everyone down with his peaceful demeanor and he has even helped our other Chihuahua, Emma to relax. Little Luke has brought much joy to our family. To me, this has been another expression of God’s love all around us.

I hope todays post will encourage you to look for God’s presence in your life. Take the time to marvel at his creation and become in awe of the way he speaks through it and to you personally. I believe spending time in God’s word will help you to know who God is and learn to hear His voice!

  1. I love this! I too love hearts and find myself also looking for them. It is coming up three years ago Stephen and l were in Israel/Jerusalem. One of our places we visited was the garden of Gethsemane. It was evening time and while we were all standing in the garden listening to Jonathan Cahn speaking, all we had for light besides the moon and stars were tiny white twinkling lights. Because I was unable to see the ground where my feet were standing, I started moving my right foot around feeling for any type of rock underneath my feet. My foot finally felt something hard so, I reached down and picked it up to see what I was holding within my hand and to my absolute surprise, it was a heart shaped rock! I remember the tears springing to my eyes as I looked up to the heavens and thanked my Jesus. That would not be the only heart rock I would find during my trip.
